Courses

At Punjabi School Bothell, we offer five different classes for your child. They all range from Beginner to Advanced. If it is your child’s first time learning Punjabi, we recommend starting from the beginning and taking Level 1. If you are unsure which class your child belongs in, feel free to contact us and we can help you with that.

PSB Level 1

This class is for beginners to learn the Punjabi language. In this class, Gurmukhī letters and numbers are introduced. Students learn to recognize, read, and write letters and numbers. They learn sounds associated with letters and relate these to the names of the day-to-day items. They learn to count in Punjabi up to 30. Simple oral commands and questions in Punjabi are introduced. Important Sikh history facts are discussed. Names of the days, fruits, vegetables, weathers, animals, birds, parts of human body, and colors are taught to build Punjabi vocabulary. Students learn to make muktā and kannā words.

    Upon successful completion of this course a student will be able to

  • LO1: Recognize and name Gurmukhī letters
  • LO2: Write Gurmukhī  letters
  • LO3: Recognize sounds of  letters
  • LO4: Count in Punjabi for numbers up to 30
  • LO5: Recognize and write numbers in Gurmukhī.
  • LO6: Understand simple oral commands and questions in Punjabi
  • LO7: Demonstrate knowledge of important Sikh history facts
  • LO8: Name days, fruits, vegetables, weathers, animals, birds, parts of human body, and colors
  • LO9: Make simple muktā words
  • L10: Make simple kannā words

    Gurubolee Punjabi Level One by Ajit Kaur

PSB Level 2

This class starts with a review of Gurmukhī letters and numbers. Students learn to make words with the ten matrās of Gurmukhī and use them in sentences. They learn to make and use in sentences the words using adhak, tippī, bindī, and foot letters. They learn to count, recognize, and write Gurmukhī numbers up to 100. They learn reading and writing names of the days, times of the day, seasons, directions, day and night, desi-months, and parts of human body. They learn to make command and interrogative sentences. They learn to read and understand simple stories and essays. Important Sikh history facts are taught. Muhārnī is introduced.

  • LO3: Make the sihārī words and use these in sentences

  • LO7: Make the dulainkar words and use these in sentences

  • LO8: Make the dulān words and use these in sentences

  • LO9: Make the horā words and use these in sentences

  • LO10: Make the kanaurā words and use these in sentences

  • LO11: Count, recognize, and write Gurmukhī numbers up to 60

  • LO12: Name days of a week, time, season, climates, directions, day and night, desi months, and parts of human body

  • LO13: Make command and interrogative sentences 
  • LO14: Read and understand simple stories and essays

  • LO15: State important Sikh history facts

  • LO16: Show familiarity with Muhārnī

Gurubolee Punjabi Level Two by Ajit Kaur

PSB Level 3

This class starts with a review of Gurmukhī letters, numbers, muhārnī, and common words. Students learn to make words with the ten matrās of Gurmukhī and use them in sentences. They learn to make and use in sentences the words using adhak, tippī, bindī, and foot letters. They learn about the property of a word as noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, and postposition. Concept of gender, number, and tense is introduced. Punjabi sentence structure is introduced. Many essay writing examples, followed by questions are used to test comprehension and writing sentences. Poetry and sayings are introduced.

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to

  • LO3: Make the sihārī words and use these in sentences

  • LO6: Make the dulainkar words and use these in sentences
  • LO7: Make the lān words and use these in sentences
  • LO8: Make the dulān words and use these in sentences
  • LO9: Make the horā words and use these in sentences
  • LO10: Make the kanaurā words and use these in sentences
  • LO11: Tell the type of a word as noun, pronoun, verb, adjective and preposition.
  • LO12: Count, recognize, and write Gurmukhī numbers up to 80
  • LO13: Understand the two gender types as masculine and feminine
  • LO14: Understand the two numbers of a word as singular and plural
  • LO15: Understand structure of a sentence as subject, object, and verbal part
  • LO16: Write and read essays on common topics.
  • LO17: Read poetry and use basic Punjabi sayings

PSB Level 4

This class starts with a review of making sentences using the words made with the matrās, auxiliary mātrās, and foot letters of Gurmukhī. Use of various types of words and questioning words in sentences is introduced. Punjabi orthography (letters and mātrās), etymology (word types: noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, and preposition), and syntax (subject, predicate, sentence types, and conjunctions) are introduced. Students work with various types of essays, stories, and poems. They work with essays on ten Sikh Gurus. Punjabi numbers and numerical adjectives are introduced. Writing on a topic involving day and night, my family, Gurdwara Sahib, and my school is covered. Punjabi sayings, Gurbānī words, and Gurbānī Shabads are introduced.

  • LO2: Use various types of words including questioning words in sentences

  • LO3: Demonstrate understanding of Punjabi letters and mātrās (orthography)

  • LO4: Demonstrate understanding of noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, and preposition words (etymology)

  • LO5: Demonstrate understanding of Punjabi sentence structure: subject, predicate, sentence types, and conjunctions (syntax)

  • LO6: Work with essays, stories, and poems

  • LO7: Count, recognize, and write Gurmukhī numbers up to 100

  • LO8: Work with essays on ten Sikh Gurus

  • LO10: Able to write on a topic involving day and night, family, Gurdwara Sahib, and school

PSB Level 5

This class starts with a review of counting in Gurmukhi and making sentences using words made with mātrās, auxiliary mātrās, and foot letters. Language topics include Punjabi grammar, word types, noun word types, pronoun word types, verb words, auxiliary verbs, adjective word types, adverb words, prepositions, conjunction words, and interjections. Punjabi conversation is developed. Punjabi poetry is introduced. Students work with essays on Sikh personalities, practices, moral values, and historical events. Gurbānī words and Gurbānī Shabads are introduced.

Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives (LOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to

  • LO1: Count in Punjabi and write numbers in Gurmukhi.

  • LO2: Demonstrate enhanced Punjabi vocabulary.

  • LO3: Make sentences using words made with matrās, auxilary mātrās, and foot letters.

  • LO4: Able to demonstrate understanding of Punjabi grammar and the use of noun word types, pronoun word types, verb words, auxiliary verbs, adjective word types, adverb words, prepositions, conjunction words, and interjections in making sentences.

  • LO5:  Able to converse in Punjabi.

  • LO6:  Demonstrate basic understanding of Punjabi poetry.

  • LO7:  Analyze essays on Sikh personalities, practices, moral values, and historical events

  • LO8:  Develop understanding of basic Gurbānī words and Gurbānī Shabads
